The Most Expensive Cars Ever Sold at Auction
When you think of high ticket auctions, art or real estate are probably the first things that pop into your mind, but the market for classic and hard to find cars is proving just as lucrative. The super rich in the world have plenty of money to spend on toys like expensive cars and in recent years, have driven the demand for rare vehicles to unprecedented levels. Here are some of the world’s most expensive cars to ever see an auction house. Some were bought by tech billionaires, CEOs and the occasional oligarch.
Ferrari really owns this list and at one point they represented nine out of the ten most valuable cars ever sold, now they have at least made room for a Mercedes or two. The price tags may seem a little crazy, in fact they are a lot crazy, but if you have billions to shop with you can buy whatever you want. Here are the most expensive cars ever to be sold at an auction:
1. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO
Price: $38,115,000
Auction: Bonhams, The Quail, 2014
Ferrari may have been bumped out of a spot or two of the top ten list but first place still belongs to this legendary car maker. This is hands down the most expensive cars ever sold and you could debate that it really is a work of art. Only 39 of these cars were built and this is one of the most raced and well-maintained examples of the lot.
2. 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti
Price: $35,700,000
Auction: Artcurial, Paris, 2016
This car has a long racing history, earning it the number two spot on the list. It has raced in three of the world’s most well-known races: the prestigious Mille Miglia, the Le Mans and the Sebring 12 hours. There is some contention as to whether it should be number one or number two because of the exchange rates at the time of sale, since it was sold in Paris and not the US.
3. 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196
Price: $29,600,000
Auction: Bonhams, Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2013
Finally, there is something other than a Ferrari on the list. This Benz was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, the 5-time Formula One world champ and sold at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in 2013. That was instrumental in earning it third place on the list, the car was sold “as is” pretty much straight off the track with visible paint chips and a layer of dirt for good measure.
4. 1956 Ferrari 290 MM
Price: $28,050,000
Auction: RM Sotheby’s Auctions, New York City, 2015
Back to Ferrari again, this car was built for Juan Manuel Fangio to race in the 1956 Mille Miglia, with a pretty distinguished racing history to follow. It set records in New York for being the most expensive car sold in 2015 and the most expensive car sale ever handled by Sotheby’s. There were only four of them ever made, making this model a collector’s dream car.
There you have it, the four most expensive cars ever sold at auction! If you look at the remaining cars on the top 10 list, you’ll find Ferrari after Ferrari, with a few other names sprinkled in. It seems that there isn’t a car company in existence that has had quite the racing history of Ferrari.
